Nicola Coughlan from ‘Bridgerton’ Takes a Fresh Look at the Manosphere in Her New Channel 4 Show
EXCLUSIVE: Details surrounding Nicola Coughlan’s upcoming Channel 4 show, which have remained under wraps until now, have finally emerged.
In a departure from her previous roles, the Bridgerton star will lead alongside Peaky Blinders actor Joe Cole in a narrative that seeks to examine the manosphere through a female lens. Cole’s character, Helen’s love interest, will become increasingly entrenched in this controversial online culture, prompting a discourse on its impacts on contemporary relationships.
At this time, Channel 4 has not provided comments on the plot or announced a premiere date, though it is known that filming took place last year.

Currently, numerous discussions are taking place across society concerning the manosphere, particularly in light of figures like Andrew Tate gaining prominence on social media. The subject gained traction after last year’s Netflix hit Adolescence, and has resurfaced this week amid conversations around Theroux’s documentary, which faced criticism for not adequately addressing the issues from a female perspective. A headline in The Guardian questioned, “Why doesn’t he focus more on the impact on women?”
Channel 4’s initiative aims to fill that gap, having been developed with Coughlan’s involvement. Titled I Am Helen, the show represents Channel 4’s unique approach to tackling the manosphere topic. Last year at the Edinburgh TV Festival, a senior Channel 4 executive described Netflix’s involvement in Adolescence as akin to “TV tourists,” alleging the platform capitalized on talent previously nurtured by Channel 4. Netflix responded robustly to these claims.
Coughlan’s profile has risen significantly since her role as the love interest in the third season of Bridgerton. This new, substantial role presents a fitting opportunity for her, especially considering her previous successes, including breakout performances in Derry Girls and Big Mood, produced with Tubi.
The show I Am Helen has been created in collaboration with Dominic Savage, who is known for his work on the acclaimed anthology series featuring stars like Kate Winslet, Letitia Wright, and Gemma Chan. This successful strand, backed by Me+You Productions, focuses on stories developed alongside female leads, utilizing improvised dialogue to address themes affecting modern women. The most recent installation, I Am Ruth, featured Winslet and her daughter Mia Threapleton as they navigated issues of mental health and social media addiction among teenagers. Winslet garnered a BAFTA for this performance, during which she urged those in power to take action against harmful online content.
