Concerns About Sepulveda Blvd in Manhattan Beach: Will It Mirror PCH in Malibu?
Tragic Death of Manhattan Beach Teen Prompts Calls for Road Safety
The tragic death of 18-year-old Ford Savela, a senior at Mira Costa High School, has sparked renewed concern over road safety in Manhattan Beach. Savela was struck by a speeding driver on January 7, 2025, an incident that has largely gone unnoticed amid the widespread media coverage of the Palisades and Eaton fires at the time.
Following the accident, the driver fled the scene but was later apprehended and is now facing charges related to Savela’s death. A memorial has been established at the intersection of Sepulveda Boulevard and 3rd Street; however, many visitors to the site seem unaware of the circumstances surrounding the teen’s death, which occurred over a year ago.
Savela’s parents are grappling with their loss and a feeling of inaction regarding safety improvements on Sepulveda Boulevard, also known as Pacific Coast Highway. Notably, a month prior to Savela’s accident, another pedestrian was killed on the same road, just half a mile away. In a further tragedy, four months later, high school student Braun Levi was also struck and killed by a suspected DUI driver on Sepulveda, only two blocks from where Savela died.
"We don’t want this to become another situation like Malibu where it takes 54 fatalities before they finally recognize they have a problem with this section of road," James Savela, Ford’s father, stated.
The recent fatality involving Braun Levi has prompted some responses from city officials, who have begun discussing measures to improve pedestrian access and increase enforcement related to speeding and driving under the influence. However, the Savela family insists that more comprehensive action is required.
Amid the heartbreak, Savela’s academic achievements remain a poignant reminder of his potential. Despite his passing, acceptance letters from his dream school, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, arrived posthumously.
"He truly led with his heart every day. He cared deeply about how he made people feel. He wanted everyone to feel included. He was truly a light. He was really, really smart, super witty, adventurous," his mother, Ashley Savela, reflected on her son’s character.
The Savela family’s efforts to raise awareness may bring attention to the critical issue of road safety, hoping to prevent future tragedies in their community.
