MLS Players with LA Connections to Keep an Eye on for the 2026 World Cup
Los Angeles Set to Host Eight Matches During 2026 World Cup
As anticipation builds for the 2026 World Cup, Los Angeles is preparing to welcome fans with a schedule that includes eight matches during the tournament this June and July. Many players from Major League Soccer (MLS) teams in the area will represent their home countries on the international stage.
Both the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) and the LA Galaxy are expected to field several players during the competition.
Canadian Representation
Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio, recently acquired by LAFC on loan from FC Porto, will don the Canadian jersey this summer. A native of Ontario, Eustáquio serves as vice-captain for the Canadian Men’s National Team. He missed a recent CONCACAF Champions Cup match while managing an injury precaution. Joining him will be Mathieu Choinière, another LAFC midfielder who has previously represented Canada at various youth and senior levels.
South Korean Star Power
South Korea’s Son Heung-Min, one of the league’s biggest signings, has quickly made his mark at LAFC since joining from Tottenham Hotspur last August. The standout forward played a pivotal role in securing one of the Asian Football Confederation’s direct World Cup spots, scoring ten goals during the qualification process. He is anticipated to be a crucial player for his national team this summer.
Ghanaian Leadership
LA Galaxy forward Joseph Paintsil also prepares to showcase his skills for Ghana as they compete in their fifth World Cup. Paintsil was instrumental in the Galaxy’s 2024 MLS Cup victory, where he scored the opening goal in the final. He has previously contributed to Ghana’s efforts during the qualifying rounds.
Scottish Contender
Ryan Porteous, born in Dalkeith, Scotland, will represent his country at the World Cup while playing for LAFC. Porteous joined the team in August 2025 from Watford FC and has experience playing for Scotland in the 2024 UEFA European Championship.
While the U.S. Men’s National Team has previously drawn players from LA’s MLS clubs, it appears no players from these teams will be included in this year’s World Cup roster. The USMNT will kick off its campaign against Paraguay on June 12 at SoFi Stadium, which will also host two Round of 32 matches and one Quarterfinal game.
Final rosters for participating teams must be submitted by May 30, with each squad consisting of 23 to 26 players. In addition to Los Angeles, other host cities across the U.S. include Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle, and the Bay Area. Mexico will host matches in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey, while Toronto and Vancouver will serve as host cities in Canada.
