Review of Seekers Of Infinite Love: A Heartfelt Look at the Smart Cult Comedy Starring Hannah Einbinder and Justin Theroux – SXSW
"Seekers of Infinite Love" Premieres at SXSW, Showcasing a Hilarious Tale of Family Dynamics
The highly anticipated film Seekers of Infinite Love made its debut Thursday night at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, marking a significant milestone for writer-director Victoria Strouse. The comedy revolves around the chaotic journey of dysfunctional siblings in pursuit of their youngest sister, who has become ensnared by a dubious group known as the Seekers of Infinite Wisdom. Both the narrative and Strouse’s comedic approach have garnered attention after years of development that included potential associations with stars like Jennifer Aniston. Ultimately, Hacks Emmy winner Hannah Einbinder leads the film, delivering a commendable performance.
In the film, Kayla (Einbinder), her lawyer brother Zach (John Reynolds), and their troubled sibling Wes (Griffin Gluck) embark on a road trip to rescue their sister Scarlett (Justine Lupe), who is in the clutches of a manipulative cult leader named Hal (Greg Kinnear). The siblings learn that followers of the group are unaware that a mass suicide is imminent, reminiscent of the infamous Jim Jones cult events. The story unfolds as they race against time to save Scarlett, who fled the family in search of acceptance and love.
To aid their mission, the trio enlists Rick (Justin Theroux), an unconventional "deprogrammer" familiar with cult dynamics. Rick guides them through various locations, including a run-down camp and a bar, as they navigate personal revelations and confront familial tensions along the way. The film explores the complexities of their relationship, emphasizing that while Scarlett may be in search of "infinite love," each sibling has their own burdens to bear.
Strouse’s sharp script is complemented by the cast’s strong performances. Einbinder, in particular, shines as a character grappling with her identity and insecurities. Her dynamic with Rick adds layers to the narrative, as tensions rise and misunderstandings unfold, particularly with Zach, who often overestimates his understanding of the situation.
The film’s supporting cast, including Reynolds and Gluck, portray their characters with depth, bringing humor and realism to the story. Theroux’s quirky portrayal of Rick provides comedic relief, while Kinnear’s take on Hal serves as a refreshing change from his typical roles.
Critics have noted the rarity of well-crafted comedies that maintain authenticity and humor without losing sight of a genuine familial bond. Strouse expertly balances outrageous comedic moments with heartfelt interactions, ensuring the story resonates deeply.
Seekers of Infinite Love was produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Dylan Sellers, and Chris Parker.
