Harvard-Westlake Clinches a Close 5-4 Victory Against Sierra Canyon in Baseball Match
Harvard-Westlake Edges Sierra Canyon Amid Dramatic Baseball Showdown
On Tuesday, baseball fans were treated to a captivating matchup between Harvard-Westlake and Sierra Canyon, filled with tension and unexpected developments, as the teams faced off in the Mission League opener. After more than three hours of play, Harvard-Westlake emerged victorious with a nail-biting 5-4 win.
The game turned pivotal in the top of the seventh inning when Ira Rootman, with two outs, delivered a crucial two-run single to give Harvard-Westlake a 5-4 lead. However, Sierra Canyon showed resilience by loading the bases with just one out in the final frame. A mismanaged squeeze play and a fly out ultimately allowed Harvard-Westlake to secure the win. Sierra Canyon struggled with missed opportunities, leaving the bases loaded three times and stranding a total of 12 runners.
Milo Benattar had previously ignited Sierra Canyon’s offense with a two-run home run that provided them with an early 3-1 lead. The Wolverines managed to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning before Sierra Canyon regained the lead at 4-3, thanks to an RBI single from Isaias Tirado.
In an effort to close out the game, Sierra Canyon coach Tom Meusborn summoned one of his top pitchers, Sean Parrow. However, after James Tronstein hit a two-out double and Ethan Price walked, Rootman’s clutch hit made the difference.
Sierra Canyon’s Armando Solorio stood out on the mound, striking out eight batters over 5 1/3 innings. Teammate Mikhal Johnson also contributed with three hits, showcasing the team’s potential despite the loss.
In other league action, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeated St. Francis 4-2, powered by Jacob Madrid’s two-run homer. Chaminade triumphed over Loyola 6-2, with Jackson Schroeder delivering five shutout innings and Anthony Costa adding two hits and two RBIs. Meanwhile, Bishop Alemany rolled past Crespi 12-3, fueled by Alex Noble’s three hits, while St. John Bosco dominated Los Osos 13-1, aided by a 10-run fifth inning.
Additional results included Foothill’s tight 1-0 victory over El Dorado, where Grady Wright pitched a seven-hit shutout. Cypress dominated JSerra 17-1 in the first game of a doubleheader, as Noah Johnson recorded four hits. Villa Park bested Garden Grove Pacifica 5-1, with Logan Hoppe striking out six in six innings and Ezra Ornelas contributing three hits.
In a remarkable performance, Newport Harbor beat Marina 4-0, powered by combined pitching from Gavin Guy and Grant Horsley. Ayala scored a strong 15-4 win over South Hills, featuring home runs from Ivan Ruddell, Jonah Boyd, and Jaden Valenzuela. Los Alamitos secured a 2-0 victory against Fountain Valley, driven by Blake Wilson’s five shutout innings. Santa Margarita overwhelmed Trabuco Hills 20-3, with Andre Owens posting three hits and three RBIs, including a home run. Windward edged out Viewpoint 4-3, with James Powell striking out seven. La Salle triumphed over Bishop Amat 11-1, highlighted by Chris Cardenas’ four-hit performance.

In softball, Saugus defeated Harvard-Westlake decisively, 12-1, with standout performances from Nicole Specht, who tallied two hits and two RBIs, and Taliya Mata, who homered and drove in four runs.
