U.S. Team Edges Out Mexico in World Baseball Classic Showdown
In a thrilling encounter at Houston’s Daikin Park, the United States secured a 5-3 victory over Mexico in the World Baseball Classic on Monday night. The triumph improves the U.S. record to 3-0 as they prepare to face Italy, who currently holds a 2-0 record, in a pivotal matchup on Tuesday.
The game’s momentum shifted in a decisive third inning, where Aaron Judge launched a two-run homer, followed shortly by a three-run blast from Roman Anthony. Jarren Duran exhibited his prowess for Mexico, smashing two home runs throughout the match, keeping their hopes alive at 2-1 in the tournament. Mexico’s next challenge will come against Italy on Wednesday night, the last game of Group B.
The match drew a vibrant crowd of 41,628 fans, with a notable majority supporting the Mexican team.
Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes showcased his talent, allowing just one hit while striking out seven batters across four innings, helping the U.S. to avenge an earlier 11-5 defeat to Mexico in the 2023 WBC.
Entering the eighth inning with a three-run lead, the U.S. faced a challenge as Duran hit his second homer off pitcher Matthew Boyd. Shortly after, Boyd hit Randy Arozarena, but managed to strike out Jonathan Aranda. Griffin Jax then stepped in, halting any further momentum with a double-play grounder from Alejandro Kirk to close the inning.
The scoring commenced in the third when Bryce Harper reached base following a ball that struck reliever Jesus Cruz. Judge’s subsequent hit sent the ball soaring into right field, putting the U.S. ahead 2-0. With Kyle Schwarber and Cal Raleigh reaching safely, Anthony’s homer amplified the score to 5-0.
Duran’s solo shot in the sixth inning drew Mexico closer, making it 5-1, and Joey Meneses added another run shortly afterward, closing the gap to 5-2.
As the tournament progresses, the stakes rise, with the U.S. looking to secure their quarterfinal spot this weekend in Houston.
