New Insights from a Close Friend About JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Private Wedding
Revelations About John F. Kennedy Jr.’s 1996 Wedding to Carolyn Bessette
In recent discussions surrounding John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, new insights have emerged regarding their intimate wedding ceremony held in 1996. Longtime friend Sasha Chermayeff provided this information, shedding light on the couple’s desire for privacy during their nuptials.
The ceremony took place at the historic First African Baptist Church in Cumberland Island, Georgia. “I was sworn to secrecy,” Chermayeff revealed in an interview with Page Six published on March 5, emphasizing the couple’s intention to keep details of their special day largely out of the public eye.
Chermayeff recalled that only a select few were invited, with arrangements made mostly through word of mouth to avoid unwanted attention from the media. "I was one of the people that found out kind of late in the game," she noted.
Describing the ceremony, Chermayeff reminisced about the beautiful church adorned with moss-draped trees, stating, “It was beautiful with that moss hanging down from the trees.” The couple’s choice of venue, a century-old church, reflected their preference for a meaningful and serene setting.
A total of 40 guests attended the candlelit event, with Chermayeff describing the attendees as “the old guard,” friends who had known each other for years. She recounted that a wardrobe malfunction briefly delayed the bride’s entrance, but it was met with understanding. “Nobody was worried,” Chermayeff remarked, explaining that "the bride is always going to take her time and come out when she’s ready."
Chermayeff characterized the ceremony as “incredibly touching and beautiful.” She was especially struck by the couple’s emotional exchange of vows, stating, “I was stunned by how beautiful Carolyn looked. And John [was] also very emotionally charged there,” calling it “such a beautiful, happy moment.”
As interest in the late couple’s love story continues to grow, Chermayeff’s insights offer a glimpse into a cherished memory that encapsulates their deep bond.
