Hazmat Team Responds to Suspicious Activity in Irvine
Irvine, CA — A hazmat team was dispatched to a residence on Cartwheel on Monday following reports of suspicious activity from a concerned homeowner. Police responded to the scene and, upon investigation, identified items that required further examination. This prompted them to call the Orange County Fire Authority for assistance from its hazardous materials unit.
Later that evening, the FBI arrived and assumed control of the investigation. In a statement, the agency noted, “The FBI’s Evidence Response Team and Hazardous Evidence Response Team responded to a residence in Irvine, California at the request of the Orange County Fire Authority. The FBI continues to work this matter jointly with the Irvine Police Department, the Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. There is no known threat to public safety. As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to provide additional information at this time.”
On Wednesday, NewsChopper4 captured footage of the scene, which featured multiple police vehicles and a designated investigation area within the neighborhood. The specifics of the items under investigation remain unclear.
