Jordan Stolz’s Journey: How Team Dynamics Affect Olympic Success
MILAN — American speedskater Jordan Stolz concluded his Olympic journey with a fourth-place finish in the mass start event, while teammate Mia Manganello exited the sport on a triumphant note, earning a bronze medal.
Stolz, who had aspirations of becoming the first man in three decades to win three gold medals in long-track speedskating, fell short in the unpredictable mass start race. The 21-year-old from Wisconsin had already claimed gold in the 500 and 1,000 meters, along with a silver in the 1,500, leading up to Saturday’s race.
Reflecting on his performance, Stolz stated, “Two golds and a silver, I have to be pretty happy with that.” However, the mass start saw Dutch competitor Jorrit Bergsma take an impressive lead early in the race, ultimately solidifying his position as the oldest Olympic speedskating champion in history. He was joined in the lead by Denmark’s Viktor Hald Thorup.
As the pair distanced themselves from the rest of the skaters, Stolz noted that the pack hesitated to challenge the leaders. “The guys were chasing for a little bit, and then they kind of expected me to continue chasing,” Stolz explained. “If I would have done that for the amount they wanted me to, I would have had no legs at the end of the race.”
Ultimately, the group seemed to settle for third place, with Stolz narrowly missing the podium behind Italy’s Andrea Giovannini. He expressed regret about not making an earlier move, indicating that he would have pushed harder had he realized the pack’s reluctance to pursue. “If I would have known they’d be reluctant to chase, I probably would have attacked a little more,” he said.
In contrast, Manganello celebrated her final race by winning a bronze medal, finishing behind gold medalist Marijke Groenewoud of the Netherlands and Canada’s Ivanie Blondin. Overcome with emotion, Manganello shared her feelings after the race, confirming her decision to retire. “Crossing the line as a medalist really solidified my career,” she stated. “And this past season has been exceptional for me… It was a blessing to close it out with a medal.”
