Benson Boone Performs His First Duet on Season 19 of American Idol
Previously Unseen Footage of Benson Boone Airs on American Idol
Five years after his stint on American Idol, previously unaired footage featuring Benson Boone has been broadcast. The revelation occurred during the February 16 episode of the ABC competition series.
This installment showcased a duet between Boone and returning contestant Mary Jo Young from Season 19. The two had performed "You Say" by Lauren Daigle during Hollywood Week in 2021, though their performance did not make it to the original airing.
Mary Jo Young, now 24, reached the Top 24 during Season 19, while Boone advanced to Hollywood Week but ultimately withdrew from the contest. Since then, he has become one of the show’s most commercially successful alumni despite not completing a full season. His 2024 single, “Beautiful Things,” emerged as a breakout hit, landing in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping international charts.
Reflecting on her earlier performance, Young humorously recalled, “Me forgetting all the lyrics to ‘You Say.’” She noted the experience allowed her to grow as an artist, stating, “It was a good, kick the baby bird out of its nest because I needed to go and grow.”
Since her initial Idol appearance, Young has toured as an opening act for artists such as Alex Warren and Jesse Murph. She expressed to the judges that she has developed greater confidence since her first audition. For her return, she performed her original song, “Don’t Call Me.” Judge Carrie Underwood praised both the song and Young’s delivery, saying, “I liked it a lot. Your voice has a different tone to it…a lot of personality in you and your voice as well.”
Lionel Richie provided broader career advice, highlighting the need for resilience in the music industry: “It ain’t about singing, it’s about surviving.” Young’s improved stage presence was remarked upon by Luke Bryan, who noted, “There is a different air of confidence to you that’s totally new.”
Young secured three yes votes, advancing her to Hollywood Week. Notably, this season’s Hollywood phase takes place in Nashville, with episodes airing on February 23 and March 2 on ABC. Following her Golden Ticket moment, Young emphasized the value of the Idol experience, stating, “I wanted to come back to American Idol because I learned the most from the show than I have on any tour. I’m going to Hollywood Week much more prepared. This ticket shows me it’s always good to get up and try again, and I’m proud of myself for it.”
