La Palma and Figueira Da Foz Named Top Filming Destinations in Europe
La Palma in the Canary Islands and Figueira Da Foz in Portugal have been named the top filming locations in Europe. The announcement came during the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival, as part of the European Film Commissions Network’s Location Awards, now in its ninth edition.
Recognized for its cinematic appeal, La Palma earned its nomination following filming for the Netflix thriller series *La Palma*. The Canary Islands, an autonomous region of Spain, has shown a growing prominence in the film industry.
Each film commission that is a member of the EUFCN can submit one location from their region, and La Palma emerged as the overall winner of the EUFCN Location Award 2025. The selection was made by a jury consisting of Alessandro Bonino from Fremantle’s Wildside, Gail McQuillan from Blueprint Pictures, Caroline von Kühn from Oxbelly, and location managers Andrea Keener and Sue Quinn.
This marks the second occasion the Canary Islands have received the Location Award, with El Hierro previously honored in 2019. The award was accepted by Natacha Mora, Coordinator at Canary Islands Film; Lorena Martín, Project Manager at Canary Islands Film; and Beatriz Páez, Island Director of Tourism for the Island Council of La Palma.
Figueira da Foz was recognized after serving as a filming location for the drama series *Broken Spies*. It received the EUFCN Audience Location Award, which is determined by public votes through an online platform.
“Winning this award shows that Portugal, and particularly Figueira da Foz, offers the right conditions and outstanding locations for major international audiovisual productions,” said Ana Marques, Executive Director of the Portugal Film Commission.
