Topanga Canyon Boulevard Closure Planned Ahead of Rainy Weather
Closure of Topanga Canyon Boulevard Ahead of Anticipated Rain
Caltrans has announced the closure of a portion of Topanga Canyon Boulevard in the Pacific Palisades area, starting Tuesday night in response to expected rain.
The closure will affect a 3.6-mile stretch of the boulevard, specifically from Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Drive. It is set to begin at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and will remain in place until further notice as the agency monitors the area for potential mud and debris flow.
“Caltrans crews will monitor and assess road conditions to reopen the highway as soon as it is safe to do so,” the agency stated. “Given the forecast, crews are expecting to reopen Wednesday unless the rainstorms bring significant impacts.”
The National Weather Service projects rainfall between 0.5 and 1 inch overnight, with peak rates expected to range from 0.2 to 0.4 inches per hour. Caltrans opted for the closure due to expected rainfall that exceeds the threshold for potential debris flow.
“The conditions pose hazards for crews and motorists,” the agency added. “Travelers should plan for alternate routes and avoid driving in rainstorms, particularly through burn scar areas. Expect delays, drive with caution, and always turn on headlights in the rain.”
In preparation for the rain, crews are placing sandbags and k-rails to stabilize a retaining wall that separates local cliffs from the road.
