Ezra Ausar Leads USC to Victory Against Rutgers
USC Secures Narrow Victory Over Rutgers Amid Close Contest
In a thrilling encounter on Saturday night, USC held on for a narrow 78-75 victory against Rutgers at the Galen Center, nearly relinquishing a substantial 19-point lead. The match showcased a display of efficient shooting from both teams, with USC ultimately coming out on top.
Freshman Alijah Arenas, who has been adjusting following an injury that delayed his season debut, showed promising flashes of his talent. With USC’s Rodney Rice sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Trojans looked to Arenas—a former five-star recruit and son of NBA legend Gilbert Arenas—to provide a much-needed spark.
Four games into his collegiate career, Arenas displayed his skills through creative shots and acrobatic finishes, particularly highlighted by a leaping layup early in the game. However, consistency has proven elusive as he finished the night with nine points on 3-of-9 shooting and fouled out before the game’s conclusion.
USC’s strong start established a double-digit lead, but 14 turnovers plagued the team, allowing Rutgers to cut into the margin with a significant 12-1 run midway through the second half. The Scarlet Knights, despite their struggles, managed to capitalize on USC’s mistakes, committing seven turnovers of their own.
As the game progressed, Rutgers mounted a late comeback with a 16-4 run, putting added pressure on the Trojans. However, a crucial steal by USC’s Chad Baker-Mazara helped secure the win. Jacob Cofie played a pivotal role, achieving his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Baker-Mazara rounded out his performance with 17 points, aided by an 11-point effort in the second half.
Leading the scoring for USC was Ezra Ausar, who tallied 21 points, energized the crowd with several slam dunks, and grabbed seven rebounds. Kam Woods contributed effectively with eight points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
Although the victory against a struggling Rutgers team, now on a five-game losing streak, may not significantly bolster USC’s resume, every win is vital in the highly competitive Big Ten. Looking ahead, USC aims to solidify their standing as they prepare to face Indiana at the Galen Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
