BBC Reporter Faces Backlash for Calling Trump Supporter Tommy Robinson “Sinister and Ludicrous”
A BBC journalist has been found in violation of the broadcaster’s impartiality rules for referring to Tommy Robinson, a notorious anti-immigration figure, as a “sinister and ludicrous” individual.
Daniel De Simone, serving as BBC News’ investigations correspondent, made the remark during a segment of BBC News at Ten on August 5, 2024. He was reporting on the aftermath of a tragic stabbing incident in Southport that resulted in the deaths of three young girls and precipitated a wave of anti-immigration riots across the UK. At the time, Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was in Cyprus, where he commented on the events from a sun lounger.
De Simone labeled Robinson as an “influential instigator,” adding, “He’s a really sinister and ludicrous figure, frankly, who is currently away in Cyprus, hiding, tweeting inflammatory material online.”
The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit, responsible for adjudicating audience complaints, stated that De Simone’s description of Robinson exceeded the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable professional judgment informed by evidence. The committee noted, “While Mr. Yaxley-Lennon’s record—including a five-year prevention order for harassing a journalist—might have warranted the term ‘sinister,’ the use of ‘ludicrous,’ especially in the given context, effectively personalizes the remark about Mr. Yaxley-Lennon, a characterization that resulted in divided opinion.”
The unit confirmed that its decision was communicated to BBC News management for further deliberation.
This incident unfolds during a particularly sensitive period for the BBC, which is embroiled in legal disputes with Donald Trump over the alleged misrepresentation in a broadcast of his January 6 speech. Robinson has consistently shown support for Trump, including endorsing his $10 billion lawsuit against the BBC. In a tweet to his 1.8 million followers back in November, Robinson urged Trump to “Finish the BBC off @realDonaldTrump.”
