Lakers Star Luka Doncic Sustains Left Leg Injury After Slipping in Cleveland
Cleveland— Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic sustained an injury during a recent game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The incident occurred in the first quarter as Doncic attempted a fadeaway three-pointer, slipping off the edge of the court with 7:58 remaining.
Immediately after the fall, Doncic grabbed his lower left leg, struggling to stand. The Lakers called a timeout, and trainers assisted him off the floor. He hobbled toward the locker room, putting minimal weight on his injured leg.
Despite the injury, Doncic made a return to the game with 1:32 left in the first quarter. He recorded four points on one-of-six shooting from the field and missed all three of his deep attempts. However, he found his rhythm in the second quarter, finishing the first half with 15 points after making five of six shots, including one three-pointer. He also contributed five assists and three rebounds, as the Lakers trailed the Cavaliers 57-55.
Cleveland’s unique arena design features a home court elevated above the floor to accommodate an ice hockey rink underneath, making it the only NBA venue with this setup. This environmental factor has previously been linked to player injuries; for instance, Miami Heat guard Dru Smith suffered a significant anterior cruciate ligament sprain after slipping off the court in 2023.
Doncic, currently the NBA’s leading scorer, is averaging 33.8 points as the Lakers navigate an eight-game road trip. The team is gradually regaining health, as guard Austin Reaves is expected to return from a calf injury by the end of the trip, which concludes on February 3.
