Mattias Ekholm and the Oilers Put an End to the Ducks’ Seven-Game Winning Streak
EDMONTON, Canada — Mattias Ekholm made headlines on Monday night, scoring a hat trick as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Anaheim Ducks 7-4. The Oilers showcased a powerful second period, which propelled them to victory.
Zach Hyman and Connor McDavid each contributed a goal and an assist, while Spencer Stastney notched his first goal in an Oilers uniform. Darnell Nurse also found the back of the net. Leon Draisaitl had an impressive game as well, providing four assists, while goaltender Tristan Jarry turned away 36 of 40 shots.
The Ducks managed to score four times, with three of those goals coming thanks to Mikael Granlund, who started the night with his 10th goal of the season just 3:24 into the game. His linemate, Alex Killorn, added another goal shortly after, scoring just 55 seconds into the second period. Beckett Sennecke also provided two assists in the contest, while Ville Husso made 25 saves in the losing effort.
This game marked a halt to the Ducks’ seven-game winning streak, which had concluded with a 4-3 overtime win against the Calgary Flames the previous day.
The Oilers welcomed back winger Kasperi Kapanen, who had missed three games due to injury, and center Josh Samanski made his NHL debut. Meanwhile, Cutter Gauthier assisted Granlund on the opening goal, extending his point streak to five games with a tally of three goals and four assists during that span.
