Martin Short recently shared a humorous story regarding his attendance at the wedding of Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco. The actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, revealing how he nearly spoiled the couple’s special day due to a misunderstanding involving the wedding cake.
During the episode aired on January 21, Short described the wedding, which took place in Santa Barbara on September 27, as “perfect and beautiful,” except for one incident during the reception. Along with his fellow cast members from Only Murders in the Building, including Steve Martin, Short was seated in a tent with designated seating areas for guests.
Short explained, “There was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake. I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back.” He recounted how, after several hours and before the cake had been cut, Steve Martin mentioned he was leaving, prompting Short to act impulsively.
“Maybe I’d had a cocktail, I don’t know,” he said, laughing. He then jokingly remarked, “You can’t leave without a piece of wedding cake!” Taking a fork in hand, he proceeded to cut into the wedding cake, causing an uproar among his group. “All the people in our group scream, ‘Marty!’” he recalled.

As the reality of what he had done sank in, Short found himself contemplating whether to leave the party altogether. He shared, “I tried to fix it with a fork. This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented.” Shortly thereafter, the wedding coordinator and chef were summoned to assess the damage.
In a humorous impersonation, Short recalled the chef’s shocked reaction, saying, “He was like, ‘What the hell happened here?’” Following some last-minute adjustments, the cake was miraculously restored, albeit with a nod to the earlier mishap. “They did surgery but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake and that it was beautiful but now it had a little work done,” Short quipped, much to the audience’s delight.
Short reflected on the moment with humor, sharing that he kept insisting to his group that they must not inform Gomez of the incident, joking that perhaps they should wait a month to tell her. Gomez, who is the founder of Rare Beauty, and Blanco wore custom Ralph Lauren for the ceremony, which was attended by many stars including Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
Gomez recently celebrated her marriage on social media, posting a heartfelt message with photos from the day, marking the occasion with the caption, “🤍 9.27.25 🤍.”
