Rian Johnson Shares His Thoughts on Returning to Star Wars Amid Mixed Reactions
While many Star Wars fans are eager for Rian Johnson to return to the beloved universe, he remains unperturbed by the prospect of taking on another chapter of the saga. In a recent post on X, Johnson succinctly stated, “Lol zero spooked, sorry.”
Johnson’s focus has largely shifted since he entered into a deal with Netflix to produce the Knives Out films, which have taken up significant time. Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, elaborated on this shift. She mentioned that after discussions about Star Wars began with Shawn Levy, Johnson became engrossed in the production of Knives Out and other projects.
While Johnson has set aside Star Wars for now, Levy has recently completed filming Star Wars: Starfighter, featuring Ryan Gosling in a leading role.
Kennedy acknowledged the challenges filmmakers face in the Star Wars ecosystem, noting, “I do believe he got spooked by the online negativity. I think Rian made one of the best Star Wars movies. He’s a brilliant filmmaker and he got spooked. This is the rough part. When people come into this space, I have every filmmaker and actors say to me, ‘What’s going to happen?’ They’re a little scared.”
Star Wars: Starfighter is set to debut in theaters on May 28, 2027. Meanwhile, Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is currently available for streaming on Netflix, and he is in the process of conceptualizing the fourth film in that franchise.
