Mickey Rourke Wants to Return $90K in Donations from Controversial Fundraiser
Mickey Rourke Takes Steps to Return Funds from Distanced Fundraiser
Actor Mickey Rourke has expressed his intention to return money raised by a fundraiser established in his name, following his recent denunciation of the initiative. In a social media post on Friday, Rourke described the fundraiser, which amassed over $100,000, as a "scam" and conveyed his feelings of being "upset and embarrassed" by the situation.
"My attorney is doing everything in his power to make sure anyone who gave their hard-earned money is quickly returned," Rourke stated, noting that more than $90,000 was to be refunded as of that day.
This fundraising campaign was launched after reports surfaced about Rourke receiving a notice to vacate his Beverly Grove residence. In response, the actor took to social media, clarifying that he never solicited funds from his fans and expressing confusion over the creation of the fundraiser.
In December, Rourke faced a notice demanding approximately $60,000 in back rent.
The fundraiser’s webpage highlighted Rourke’s transition from acting to boxing and detailed his struggles with mental health and financial stability. "Boxing—real and punishing—left lasting physical and emotional scars, and the industry that once celebrated him moved on quickly," it read. The page also claimed that the fundraiser was initiated with Rourke’s "full permission" to prevent eviction.
Describing Rourke as an icon, the site emphasized the depth of his challenges: "Fame does not protect against hardship, and talent does not guarantee stability. What remains is a person who deserves dignity, housing, and the chance to regain his footing."
Rourke is known for his notable roles in films such as Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 "Rumble Fish," and he received both a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for his performance in "The Wrestler" in 2008. His body of work also includes leading roles in "Barfly" and "Diner."
