Julio Iglesias Denies Assault Allegations
Julio Iglesias has publicly denied allegations of sexual and physical assault made by two former employees. The singer characterized the claims as "absolutely false" in a statement posted on Instagram on January 15. The controversy arose following a joint investigation published by elDiario.es and Univision Noticias on January 13.
The allegations involve two anonymous women who reportedly worked at Iglesias’ residences in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas in 2021. Following the release of the investigation, Iglesias responded just two days later, asserting his innocence.
“With deep regret, I respond to the accusations made by two people who previously worked at my home. I deny having abused, coerced or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and cause me great sadness,” the 82-year-old singer stated.
Iglesias further expressed that he had never encountered such animosity and emphasized his commitment to defending his dignity. He expressed gratitude to supporters who sent messages of affection and loyalty during this time.
The investigation, which spanned three years, surfaced following a formal complaint reportedly filed on January 5. The claimants allege they experienced sexual assault, workplace harassment, and verbal and physical abuse while employed by Iglesias.
At the time of the allegations, inquiries were made to Iglesias through his entertainment attorney, Russell L. King, although there was no immediate response. The Spanish prosecutors’ office has since indicated that they are examining the allegations.
Women’s Link Worldwide, a non-governmental organization representing the accusers, revealed that the women, identified by the pseudonyms Rebeca and Laura, seek justice for multiple reasons including personal healing and advocating for the protection of others.
“I want to tell them to be strong, to raise their voices, to remember that he is not invincible,” Rebeca stated in a released statement.
Laura echoed this sentiment, expressing her hope that her actions would prevent future abuse: “I want to send the message that women are victims and survivors, not perpetrators or guilty parties."
Spanish government officials have weighed in on the issue, with spokeswoman Elma Saiz affirming the government’s commitment to addressing violence against women. Ana Redondo, Spain’s Equality Minister, acknowledged Iglesias’s talent but warned of the potential for a "dark side" among public figures.
Iglesias, one of the best-selling artists in history, has received two Grammy Awards and is the father of singer Enrique Iglesias.
