Chargers Part Ways with Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman After Playoff Setback
Chargers Dismiss Offensive Coordinator and Coach Following Playoff Exit
Less than 48 hours after their playoff departure, the Los Angeles Chargers have parted ways with offensive coordinator Greg Roman and offensive line coach Mike Devlin. This decision follows the team’s disappointing performance in the AFC Wild Card playoffs, where they suffered a 16-3 defeat to the New England Patriots.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh had expressed uncertainty about Roman’s future following the loss, stating that the team would “look at that.” The Chargers’ struggles stemmed from consecutive playoff exits, including a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans the previous season, which saw quarterback Justin Herbert throw four interceptions.
In the playoff game against the Patriots, the Chargers’ offense was notably ineffective. Herbert completed 19 of 31 passes for 159 yards, while the team produced a mere 207 total yards. Their final five possessions ended with three punts, a fumble, and a turnover on downs, underscoring the offensive struggles.
The Chargers’ challenges were compounded by an injury-hit offensive line, which had already lost key players Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt to season-ending injuries. Herbert faced considerable pressure, being sacked six times during the game. The running game also faltered, particularly after Najee Harris tore his Achilles tendon in Week 3. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton, having missed six games due to a fractured left ankle, played limited snaps against the Patriots after sustaining a right ankle injury in Week 17.
Harbaugh and Roman share a long history, having collaborated since 2009 when Harbaugh invited Roman to join his staff at Stanford. Roman later served as offensive coordinator under Harbaugh with the San Francisco 49ers and most recently held the same position with the Baltimore Ravens from 2019 to 2022.
This is a developing story, and further updates regarding the future of Roman and Devlin are anticipated.
