One Battle After Another and Hamnet Shine at the Golden Globes
Beverly Hills, California — January 11, 2023
Paul Thomas Anderson’s film "One Battle After Another" swept the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, taking home accolades for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, along with multiple wins in directing, screenplay, and acting categories. The film’s triumph solidified its status as a major contender this awards season.
In a surprising twist, Chloé Zhao’s "Hamnet" clinched the Best Motion Picture – Drama award, marking an unexpected victory over Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners," which many anticipated would be a close competitor.
"Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" not only won Best Film – Comedy, but also earned the Best Supporting Actress award for Teyana Taylor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Anderson became the second filmmaker in Golden Globe history to achieve a sweep of these categories, previously accomplished only by Oliver Stone for "Born on the Fourth of July."
As the night progressed, the dramatic category saw "Hamnet," a captivating interpretation of William Shakespeare’s life, prevail just after Jessie Buckley secured the Best Actress award in a drama for her role in the film.
The awards ceremony highlighted Warner Bros.’ success, as the studio produced both "One Battle After Another" and "Sinners." Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery is engaged in a significant transaction to be acquired by Netflix for an estimated $83 billion, as rival company Paramount Skydance presents its own offer to shareholders.
Reflecting on his directing victory, Anderson expressed gratitude toward Warner co-chief Michael DeLuca. “He said he wanted to run a studio one day and let filmmakers make whatever they want. That’s how you get ‘Sinners.’ That’s how you get ‘Weapons.’ That’s how you get ‘One Battle After Another,’” he remarked.
The event served as a moment of unity among some of the industry’s most respected filmmakers, including Zhao, Coogler, and Steven Spielberg, the latter involved in producing "Hamnet." Zhao fondly recalled shared experiences with Coogler during their early careers, emphasizing the importance of mutual acknowledgment and support.
"Sinners" also received recognition, winning for Best Score and achievements in box office performance—claiming a total of $278 million domestically and $368 million globally since its release, marking it as the highest-grossing original film in 15 years.
Ryan Coogler expressed appreciation for audience turnout, stating, "I just want to thank the audience for showing up. It means the world."
The ceremony, hosted by Nikki Glaser, delivered a satirical and politically charged atmosphere amid Hollywood’s current climate of uncertainty, following a challenging box office year and broader industry tensions. Attendees wore "Be Good" pins in memory of Renee Good, a victim in a recent tragic incident involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.
Originally overseen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes underwent changes in structure and governance, now being voted on by approximately 400 members following their sale to Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries. This contrasts sharply with the Academy Awards, which are determined by over 10,500 industry professionals.
Throughout the evening, standout winners included Timothée Chalamet for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for "Marty Supreme" and Stellan Skarsgård, who claimed his first major Hollywood award for "Sentimental Value." Skarsgård expressed surprise at his win, humorously admitting, “I was not prepared for this because I, of course, thought I was too old.”
In television awards, "The Pitt" won Best Drama Series, while Netflix’s "Adolescence" secured four awards, including Best Limited Series and acting honors for its cast members. Seth Rogen’s "The Studio" was awarded Best Comedy Series, complemented by Rogen’s own accolades for Best Actor in a Comedy.
"This is so weird," Rogen remarked on stage, embracing the surreal nature of the night. "We just pretended to do this. And now it’s happening."
As the 83rd Golden Globes unfolded, it combined moments of triumph and reflection, revealing both the glitz of Hollywood and the underlying complexities of its current landscape.
