Ethan Hawke Promises "Greatest Film Ever Made" with Richard Linklater
Ethan Hawke is expressing tremendous excitement for his tenth collaboration with director Richard Linklater, claiming it will be "among the greatest films ever made." During an appearance on NBC’s Today show on January 7, the 55-year-old actor indicated he was unreserved in his enthusiasm for the yet-to-be-announced project.
"Everything’s been preparation for what’s to come," Hawke stated. "The 10th is going to be the best." When host Craig Melvin described his assertion as a "bold statement," Hawke confidently replied, "I’m making it, man. I’m not even shy. I’m not even nervous about saying it."
Hawke elaborated on the history behind the film, mentioning that Linklater had been pondering it since 1998. “He’s had this dream for a long time in his head, and it’s gonna be good,” he added.

Hawke, who has previously starred in several acclaimed Linklater films, including Before Sunrise, Boyhood, and most recently Blue Moon, asserted, "Personally, I have no doubt in saying it will be among the greatest films ever made." He expressed confidence that he would return to the show in about 18 months to support this claim, as they expect to complete filming next year, aiming for a 2027 release.

Though specific details about the new project remain sparse, Hawke confirmed that it is a "period piece." Given their longstanding partnership, Hawke anticipates a script rich in dialogue, noting, “All the movies are wildly dialogue-heavy, so I’m used to pulling the weight with him.”
As of now, the project has not been officially announced, but both Hawke and Linklater have numerous upcoming commitments.

Linklater previously mentioned that he and Hawke have developed a unique dynamic over their years of collaboration. "We have a shorthand," he remarked, noting that while their past work has been fluid, Blue Moon required a more meticulous approach. “I was a more nagging director,” he explained, emphasizing the film’s technical demands.
Hawke concurred, stating, "We’re inside a period. We’re inside real time. The filmmaking and acting have to be completely in sync."
