Miley Cyrus Shares How Her Malibu Home Influenced Her Song “Fire and Ash”: A Personal Take on Rebuilding
Miley Cyrus Reflects on Resilience in New Song for Avatar: Fire and Ash
Miley Cyrus has opened up about her new song, "Dream as One," written for the film Avatar: Fire and Ash. The musician shared insights into how her personal experiences informed her creative process while speaking to PEOPLE.
Cyrus, 33, described the emotional connection she feels with the song, particularly in light of her own journey of rebuilding after losing her Malibu home to wildfires in 2018. "In the title alone, Fire and Ash, I’ve had my own experience with rebuilding from the ground up," she noted, recognizing the significance of resilience in her life.
The Grammy-winning artist emphasized the themes of community and support in her new music, especially following the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this year. "I felt after we experienced the fires this year, lately we’ve all had this idea of being there for each other and stepping in when your people need it," Cyrus explained.
In her reflections, Cyrus pointed out that the importance of support extends beyond family to include chosen family. "And the resilience and courage that it takes to start again. And somehow finding that all you really need is each other," she said.
The new track plays during the credits of James Cameron’s latest installment in the Avatar series. Cyrus expressed that her songwriting process for this project was unique; she had the opportunity to view the film in a work-in-progress stage, which helped her align her music with its themes. "I came in kind of late, so feeling like I got to be a part of building it — and to design musically and lyrically around what the themes of Fire and Ash are all about," she said.
Cyrus has previously described losing her home as “the biggest blessing” of her life, suggesting that darker times ultimately guide one toward a brighter future. This message of growth and rebirth comes through strongly in Avatar: Fire and Ash, which continues the story of Jake and Neytiri as they navigate new challenges on Pandora.
As Cyrus prepares for future opportunities, she expressed a desire to contribute to Hollywood projects where her songs can make a lasting impact. "There’s certain songs that even if they were written for the film or just a song used in the film… they become embedded," she remarked.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently in theaters.
