Ariana Grande is bringing attention to the societal issues surrounding unsolicited comments about personal appearances.
On November 29, the 32-year-old artist took to her Instagram Stories, sharing clips from a 2024 interview in which she discussed her experiences with unsolicited remarks. In the footage, she included a text overlay reading, “Friendly Reminder.”
“I’ve been a specimen in a Petri dish, really, since I was 16 or 17, you know?” Grande begins in the clips. “So I have heard it all. I’ve heard every version of it, of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons — from what you’re wearing, to your body, to your face, to your everything,” she explained.
Grande, known for her role in Wicked: For Good, indicated that commenting on others’ bodies has become normalized in our culture, despite the potential harm it causes. “There’s a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all—commenting on others’ looks, [their] appearance, what [we] think is going on behind the scenes or [their] health,” she stated. “It’s uncomfortable and horrible, no matter where it’s happening, no matter the scale that it’s happening on.”

In her discussion, Grande described these unsolicited opinions as “dangerous,” yet she expressed gratitude for having a strong support system throughout her career. She stated, “I think that I’m really lucky to have the support system that I have, and to just know and trust that I’m beautiful, you know? But I do know what the pressure of that noise feels like. It’s been a resident in my life since I was 17. And I just don’t invite it in anymore. It’s not welcome.”

In closing, she encouraged her followers to “protect” themselves from the “noise” of societal expectations whenever possible. Grande’s reflections are part of an ongoing dialogue she has maintained regarding body image. Previously, in April 2023, she addressed body shaming in a rare TikTok confessional, reminding her followers that appearance should not be the sole measure of health or beauty. Her words serve as a timely reminder to approach discussions about body image with empathy and understanding, highlighting the often unseen struggles individuals face.
