Be Cautious: Scammers Are Targeting Pet Owners by Impersonating Sheriff Officials
Orange County Officials Warn of Scammers Targeting Pet Owners
Orange County officials have issued a warning about scammers impersonating law enforcement and targeting pet owners with missing animals. These criminals are reportedly calling individuals to falsely claim that their pets have been involved in accidents, such as being hit by a car.
According to Mission Viejo Animal Services, the scammers assert that payment is required for the release of the pet, which they allege has been treated by a veterinarian. In one instance, a scammer claimed that a nonprofit organization would cover part of the expenses, but insisted that the pet owner would need to pay the remainder.
Animal services officials noted that these scammers typically request payment via platforms such as Zelle or Venmo. “Scams target people to create emotion and stir up feelings to get a quick response, as seen in this scam, as well as the grandparent scam, outstanding warrant scam, and others that appear to necessitate quick payment and response,” stated Crime Prevention Specialist Lisa Lebron Flores.
Mission Viejo advises anyone receiving such suspicious calls to refrain from making any payments and to verify the claims by contacting the agency directly. To avoid falling victim to these scams, they recommend not answering calls from unfamiliar numbers.
The shelter has urged individuals to report any scams to their local sheriff’s office.
